Homeschooling

Homeschooling is currently a hot social issue because of the major increase of homeschooled American children in the last decade. There are two major opinions on this issue: parents who believe they have a right to choose how their children are educated and those who believe that children need to be socially stimulated and that educators can instill patriotic values that cannot be taught in the home arena. Many parents insist that children can learn more easily at home, in an environment where disruptions are few and parents can teach children one-on-one. Parents allow children to work at their own pace, sometimes even permitting them to choose their own curriculum. Parents also believe that there is something seriously wrong with the public school system, with felons in their children’s classes and fights during lunch almost every day. In the parents opinion, homeschooling is an excellent alternative to the public school just as wonderful as any private school. However, society tends to believe that children are made better citizens in the public school system, which many people consider is a major foundation of our country.

Millions of people out there have made it their business, their job, to train young people in academics. There could be no other reason, for homeschoolers have proven themselves time and time again. His studies have shown that home educating parents have adequately taught their children every necessary part of socialization for children: identity, destiny, morals, self-government, interactions with others, sexuality, and social skills. How many children are not getting sufficient education? How much money is being wasted on little education?

It is now clear that both sides of this argument have substantial evidence supporting their claims and that one must take a middle ground when deciding between them. They don’t care much to learn purposefully at all. Altogether, homeschooling has increased by 30% since 1991. Furthermore, a parent must have some education if he or she is going to teach his or her child. However, Patricia Lines, an expert in homeschooling affairs, states:

Home educators have not turned their backs on the broader social contact as understood at the time of the Founding of America. No adults who were educated at home are on welfare, and all are employed. However, homeschooling can be a good alternative to private and public schools and, if used correctly, can even help parents teach their children better than traditional schools. First of all, the homeschooling families must keep record of grades and act as real teachers to their children. The homeschooling parents point of view is well founded. Simon from the Arkansas department of education states: You’ve got examples of very well-structured home schools and total disasters . They do not get the same education as another public-schooled child because the schooling is tailored exactly to what the children want.

Home-schooling is one of the most flexible and diverse educational option available today. The variety of home-schooling styles reflects the diversity of the people who choose this method. Some families organize their home-school the same as a traditional school, with the children studying the same subjects the same way as public and private school students. They just acquire the curriculum of the traditional schools and teach it in their very homes. On the other hand, some families use the opposite approach and “un-school” their children-a far less structured approach where the children’s schedule is determined by their interests and readiness. Most home-schoolers, however, use an eclectic approach that is partly structured and partly interesting based.

But to stress, home-schooling is not for everyone. There must be a balance because even if the child is the primary learner, he still needs guidance from people who have been around, and have read around.

This may be an alternative option for the Filipino family. As a teacher, you can learn as you teach. By allowing the child to enjoy childhood, they believe the child’s maturity will allow him to learn much more quickly. The parent should always give their child a chance to grow socially.
